On the occasion of the Day of Remembrance of defenders of Ukraine, who died in the struggle for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state, a laying of flowers and a mourning ceremony took place in Odesa.
The event was attended by Odesa Mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov, First Deputy Chairman of the Odesa Regional Council Oleg Radkovskyi, Deputy Chairman of the Odesa Regional State Administration Dmytro Radulov, representatives of the clergy and public organizations.
The holy fathers read a joint prayer in memory of the fallen soldiers of Ukraine, and the representatives of the authorities laid flowers at the plaque honoring the fallen.
The date of August 29 was not chosen by chance, as it is timed to the events in the east of Ukraine, when the Ukrainian army suffered the greatest losses during the Ilovai operation. In 2014, during the Russian-Ukrainian war and the Ilovaya operation, a powerful breakthrough of a Ukrainian group of troops from the Russian encirclement took place, where the massive heroism of volunteers and soldiers was manifested, and the largest number of Ukrainian soldiers died.
According to official data, during the Ilovai operation (August 7-29, 2014) and the subsequent shooting in the so-called "green corridor", 366 Ukrainian soldiers died, 429 were wounded of various degrees of severity, 128 were captured, and 42 are considered missing.
