The Main Department of Internal Security of the SBU together with the National Police neutralized a criminal group that terrorized the residents of Odesa. Criminals impersonated officials of the Security Service and the Military Commissariat and "extorted" money from potential conscripts.
In the department official sites of both clubs report, that for various amounts of "buy-off" the involved parties promised the victims not to bring them to criminal responsibility for allegedly evading mobilization.
"For the sake of "persuasiveness", the attackers faked SBU chevrons and presented their victims with a fake ID card of an employee of the Ukrainian special service. In case of refusal to pay, the racketeers threatened kidnapping and physical violence. The fact that gang members extorted 20 US dollars from a local resident was documented."
The perpetrators have now been arrested. They were taken into custody and reported on suspicion under three articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:
- Part 4 of Art. 189 (extortion committed by an organized group under martial law);
- Art. 146 (illegal deprivation of liberty or abduction of a person);
- Art. 353 (arbitrary assignment of authority or title of an official).
The perpetrators face up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property.
Complex measures to neutralize the gang were carried out jointly with the National Police under the procedural guidance of the Specialized Prosecutor's Office in the military and defense sphere of the Southern region.
