Macron invited Orbán to Paris to find a compromise on Ukraine's EU accession, Politico

Macron believes that the Hungarian leader can still be persuaded to support Ukraine's accession to the EU

French President Emmanuel Macron has invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to a meeting in Paris later this week to find a compromise on the start of negotiations with Ukraine on its accession to the EU. It is reported Politico.

As a source in Paris told the publication, Macron believes that the Hungarian leader can still be persuaded to support Ukraine's accession to the EU.

According to the official, Orbán "raised the stakes" to get more money from the EU.

"This is a purely tactical moment... So there is some optimism that we can reach an agreement," - said the interlocutor of the publication.

At the same time, according to an EU official, European Council President Charles Michel cut short his trip to Beijing because Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is threatening to disrupt the summit of EU leaders on December 14-15.

Meanwhile, a diplomat from another European country called the Hungarian prime minister's threats a political spectacle and also tried to counter the impression that Orbán is dictating the agenda to the other 26 countries, saying: “Another day, another letter from Budapest. What's new?"

However, another senior diplomat from a third EU country said Orbán was becoming increasingly intransigent. In addition, the representative of the European Union in Brussels also said that this time the head of the Hungarian government seems to really make it clear that he will not back down from his position on the accession of Ukraine, even if he receives more funds from Europe.
