Ukraine and the USA will build a small modular reactor

Ukraine and the USA agreed on the creation of a new pilot project for the construction of a small modular reactor (SRM).

This was announced on November 13 by the Ambassador of Ukraine to the USA, Oksana Markarova, on her Facebook page.

"Today, within the framework of the 27th UN climate conference, the US President's special climate envoy John Kerry and the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko announced the start of a pilot project to build a small modular reactor in Ukraine," Markarova wrote.

As part of the new project, a small modular reactor will be built on the territory of Ukraine.

Kerry also announced the launch of the "Project Phoenix" initiative, which will accelerate the transition of coal-fired power plants in Central and Eastern Europe to nuclear fuel.

It should be noted that small modular reactors are smaller in size and power than conventional reactors installed at nuclear power plants. Their advantage is that they can be built in hard-to-reach places.

The partners of the program were the international consortium of the Argonne National Laboratory, Energoatom, the NSDC and the State Scientific and Technical Center for Nuclear and Radiation Safety, as well as a number of private companies. These include Clark Seed, Doosan Enerbility, FuelCell Energy, IHI Corporation, JGC Corporation, Samsung C&T and Starfire Energy.
