A record amount of snow fell near the Antarctic station "Akademik Vernadsky" in 20 years. Snowdrifts with a height of 2,75 meters were recorded there. This was reported on the Facebook page of the National Antarctic Science Center.
"Our polar explorers received an unusual gift for St. Nicholas's Day. Meteorologists recorded that the snow level near the station "Akademik Vernadsky" is... 2,75 m: this is the highest value in the last 20 years! - the message says.
The previous record mark was set in 2016. Then 2,65 meters of snow fell, that is, 10 centimeters less.
On December 1, the calendar summer began in Antarctica. But, despite this, huge snowdrifts have to be cleared every day. And the penguins, heroically remaining to incubate the eggs, did not suffer.
"Of course, such weather will diversify the life not only of the polar inhabitants (because it is necessary to wave a shovel quite a lot to clear even the main areas), but also of their main neighbors - penguins. The nests, which are located in the lowlands, are completely covered with snow: only the heads of the birds, which continue to incubate eggs, stick out of them," polar explorers say.
