UN Secretary General: "The current century may turn out to be the last for humanity"

In his opinion, the danger lies in global warming

UN Secretary General António Guterres said that humanity may simply not survive to the 22nd century if we do not start fighting global warming on the planet now. This was reported by the UN press service.

"If we do not start acting now, this century may turn out to be the last for humanity," Guterres emphasized.

The UN Secretary General reminded that, according to scientists, it is necessary to keep the global temperature rise at the level of one and a half degrees per hour on the Celsius scale. However, despite the recommendations of climatologists, this task has not yet been completed.

— Billions of people around the world are already suffering from our inaction. Due to our dependence on fossil fuels, we burn in place. Global climate change is causing unprecedented forest fires, intense and frequent cyclones, floods, droughts and other extreme weather phenomena, added the UN Secretary General.

According to Guterres, no country in the world is immune from the climate crisis. At the same time, in each state, the poorest and most vulnerable segments of the population, who are the least involved in the emergence of the problem of climate change, suffer the most.

António Guterres called on the governments of the Earth and the entire international community to put into action a plan based on the following principles:

— priority investment in green jobs;

- refusal to support industries that pollute the environment;

- termination of subsidies for enterprises that are engaged in the extraction and processing of fossil fuels;

— taking climate risks into account when making any financial and political decisions;

— global cooperation in the spirit of mutual assistance and solidarity;

- assistance to states that are lagging behind in the struggle for a healthy climate on the planet.
