2022 may be the year the pandemic ends

Scientists are pinning their hopes on the development of second- and third-generation vaccines.

The World Health Organization declared that 2022 will be the year of the end of the pandemic, which has already claimed the lives of more than 5,6 million people worldwide. This was stated by the head of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Scientists place their hopes on the development of second- and third-generation vaccines, as well as on the further development of antimicrobial drugs and other innovations.

"We hope that this disease will become relatively mild, and we will be able to easily prevent and treat it," the WHO said.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus also said that China, where the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was first detected at the end of 2019, must provide data and information related to its origin to help in the future response.

"If we can reduce the transmission of the virus to a minimum, then we can end the pandemic," said Tedros.

At the same time, the head of the WHO drew attention to the fact that the omicron strain spreads faster than the "delta". Now it is more likely that people who have been vaccinated or who have had COVID-19 can become infected, including again.
