The crypto community criticized the NYT article about Bitcoin mining

Bitcoin

On April 9, The New York Times (NYT) published an article entitled "The Real Costs of the Digital Race for Bitcoin" , which caused dissatisfaction among supporters of the first cryptocurrency.

According to the authors of the article, mining is accompanied by "voracious appetites" for electricity and consumes as much resources as all residential buildings in New York.

Expert from ESG -standards Daniel Batten said the NYT article overstates the actual use of fossil fuels in the extraction of the asset. According to him, the material deliberately ignores the use of renewable energy sources.

"Currently, 26 miners in the US and Canada use more than 90% clean energy, and their number is growing rapidly," the analyst added.

The article focused on the companies with the least support for green mining.

Bitcoin advocate Troy Cross pointed out that the NYT uses "marginal emissions accounting" but selectively applies it only to bitcoin mining, ignoring other energy sources.

"Emissions accounting is a useful tool for specific purposes, but it does not apply well to the entire mining industry," he explained.

CEO of the Satoshi Act Foundation, Dennis Porter, pointed out the typographical error. Journalists confused the city in which the main mining center in the USA will be built.

"Wow. The NYT didn't even bother to check the city […] It's Rockdale, Texas. Not Rockland,” Porter remarked.

Pierre Rocher, vice president of research at the mining company Riot, accused the publication of falsifying some data.

Many companies have already started to develop the idea of green mining of the first cryptocurrency.

Cipher Mining has launched a network of bitcoin miners in a new 40MW wind-powered data center in Texas. And Irish farmer Tom Campbell learned to use cow dung for waste-free extraction of the asset.
