During the preparation for the World Cup in Qatar, more than 6,5 workers died on construction sites

It is noted that, in fact, there may be much more deaths on construction sites

More than 6,5 migrants have died in Qatar, working on the construction of stadiums, hotels, airports and other facilities that are preparing for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in the country.

The data is provided by the British newspaper The Guardian, based on data from the embassies in Qatar of five countries whose citizens worked on local construction sites.

The publication also writes about which migrant workers from which countries most often died on construction sites in Qatar related to the championship:

  • India — 2,7 thousand people;
  • Nepal — 1,6 thousand people;
  • Bangladesh — 1 thousand;
  • Pakistan — more than 800 people;
  • Sri Lanka — more than 550 people.

It is known that the decision to hold the World Cup 2022 in Qatar was made in December 2010, soon after that, large-scale construction began in the country, in which up to two million migrant workers took part. Human rights organizations have repeatedly drawn attention to the violation of the rights of workers at these construction sites and the poor working conditions there.

The Guardian writes that the Qatari authorities characterized most of the cases as natural deaths, while attention was not drawn to such deaths and the bodies remained without autopsy, which would establish the cause of death.

It is also noted that the actual number of deaths on construction sites may be much higher, since the statistics found in the hands of journalists do not take into account data on workers from many other countries, for example, from Kenya and the Philippines, migrants from which also work on construction sites in Qatar.

We would like to remind you that the World Cup in Qatar should take place from November 21 to December 21, 2022.
