Britain will help Ukraine in creating a tribunal for Russian officials

The campaign to create a specialized court was led by British lawyer Philip Sands and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown

Britain has offered legal support for a tribunal to hold Russian civilian and military leaders, including Vladimir Putin, accountable for war crimes in Ukraine.

About this reports the edition of The Guardian.

The campaign to create a specialized court was led by British lawyer Philip Sands and former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

British Foreign Minister James Cleverley said that Russia's war crimes should not go unpunished. That is why Britain accepted Ukraine's invitation to join the group of international partners working on the accountability mechanism, offering legal expertise, and urged other G7 countries to also participate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated: "The investigation of the crime of aggression could complement the established mechanisms of investigation of war crimes, including the international criminal court and the internal judicial process of Ukraine. Together, these parallel processes will help ensure a full investigation of all crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice."

Jeffrey Nice, the lead prosecutor in the Slobodan Milosevic trial, said: "I firmly believe that everything that is done from the point of view of responsibility should be done by Ukrainians, in Ukraine, in the Ukrainian and Russian languages."

He is sure that it is Ukrainians who should lead the process, and international partners can only advise on how to make everything better. He noted that this will help Kyiv to avoid international pressure when making this or that decision.
