The poisoning of the Russian oppositionist Alexei Navalny can be considered the use of chemical weapons if the data on the use of a substance from the Novichok group are confirmed.
This was announced by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons.
"According to the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, any poisoning of a person with the help of a nerve agent is considered to be the use of chemical weapons. Such a statement causes serious concern," they noted there.
The OPCW added that the member states of the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons consider the use of chemical weapons by anyone under any circumstances reprehensible and completely contrary to international legal norms.
"The OPCW continues to monitor the situation and is ready to cooperate with any participating states that may request its assistance and provide them with assistance," the organization summarized.
