The European Commission officially recommended granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for joining the European Union. This was announced by the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
"The commission recommends to the Council, firstly, to give Ukraine a European perspective and secondly, to give it candidate status. Of course, with the understanding that the country will implement a certain set of further important reforms," von der Leyen said at a briefing in Brussels.
On Thursday, the leaders of France, Germany and Italy in Kyiv declared their support for granting Ukraine candidate status.
An official decision on the status of Ukraine should be made at the summit of EU leaders on June 23.
