Anniversary of the tragedy of Babi Yar: the National Remembrance Lesson will be held in all schools of Ukraine

On the basis of the online platform "Red Memory Point"

To mark the 80th anniversary of the Baby Yar tragedy, on September 29, 15 Ukrainian schools will simultaneously hold a National Remembrance Lesson. It will be held by the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. The lesson is designed to develop a negative attitude to the facts of discrimination, disregard for human dignity, encroachments on the right to life.

The lesson for students of grades 5-11 will be held on the basis of the online platform "The red dot of memory", developed by the Memorial Center. All materials are prepared taking into account the age and emotional maturity of schoolchildren. The lesson will also be streamed on the website of the Ministry of Education and Science social networks of the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center.

"According to the results of research, almost half of Ukrainians do not know where Babi Yar is located. That is why the main task of the educational direction of the Memorial Center is to enlighten and create new models of teaching the history of the Holocaust, - noted the director of educational projects of the Holocaust Memorial Center "Babiy Yar" Anna Mazarchuk. - We are grateful to the Ministry of Education for supporting our projects and working together on the National Memory Lesson. We strive to change the approach to the study of history and make the process interesting for schoolchildren. This lesson will be the first in history to revive the memory of the Holocaust. Thanks to the author's method using information technologies and elements of research practice, students will be able to better understand the events from the textbook and make their contribution to restoring the truth."

The online platform "Red point of memory", on the basis of which the lesson will be held, is dedicated to the study of the history of the Second World War and the Holocaust and was created as an assistant to history teachers. The platform offers a new method of teaching a school subject, interactive and interesting for students.

In real time, teachers and students are already documenting the local and regional history of the Second World War and the Holocaust, namely, recording the memories of eyewitnesses, digitizing museum exhibits and artifacts from home archives, and looking for information about local monuments to the victims of the Holocaust. All recorded evidence and digitized sights are added to the platform and become red dots on the map that form a common, unified story. The main goal of the project is to form such a society in which it is impossible to repeat a tragedy similar to the Holocaust.

Earlier, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine approved the "Red Memory Point" platform and methodological materials for working with educational projects on it.

As a reminder, in August, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Babiy Yar Holocaust Memorial Center signed a partnership memorandum. The parties agreed on cooperation in the field of education and science. One of the first joint steps was to plan a national memorial lesson for the 80th anniversary of the Baby Yar tragedy for students of Ukrainian schools. A number of other educational events are also planned.
