The Ministry of Health has published an algorithm of actions in the event of a nuclear disaster:
- Stay in shelter. It can be a basement or the middle of a building. Radioactive material settles on the outside of buildings, so it is best to stay as far away from building walls and roofs as possible. You should also keep pets nearby, do not allow them to walk outside. You should stay in shelter until the official authorities have given other instructions.
- Follow official sources of information. If local authorities and emergency workers give instructions, they must be followed.
- Disinfect yourself. Remove the top layer of clothing - this way you will get rid of 90% of the radioactive material. Do this carefully so as not to shake up the radioactive dust. Place the clothing in a plastic bag or airtight container, and keep it away from people and pets.
- Wash if possible. Take a shower with soap, wash your head with shampoo. Do not use hair conditioners as they can fix radioactive material to your hair. Do not rub or scratch the skin to prevent radioactive material from entering open wounds. If you cannot take a shower, wash your hands, face and exposed body parts with soap under running water. If there is no access to water, use wet wipes, a wet cloth.
- Wear clean clothes. If possible, everything should be done in gloves and a mask or respirator.
