The EU fears that Trump's coming to power could "disintegrate NATO", - NYT

The EU fears that Trump's coming to power may not only lead to the refusal of aid to Ukraine, but also "the distance of the USA from Europe and the destruction of NATO"

American newspaper The New York Times with reference to European diplomats and officials, writes that the EU does not know how to deal with the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, in case he wins the elections in 2024. A number of European politicians believe that Trump's coming to power can actually "break up NATO."

Several current and former European officials interviewed by journalists said there was growing anxiety among their governments.

In their opinion, Trump's return could mean not only the refusal of aid to Ukraine, but also "the distance of the USA from Europe and the destruction of NATO."

"Donald Trump has made it clear that he sees NATO as eating away at American resources. He has held this view for at least a quarter of a century. In his 2000 book, "The America We Deserve," Trump wrote that "withdrawing from Europe would save our country millions of dollars a year." After becoming president, he repeatedly threatened the withdrawal of the United States from the Alliance.

In an effort to return to the White House, Trump has practically not broached the subject. His campaign website has one cryptic proposition: "We must complete the process begun under my administration of a fundamental reassessment of NATO's goals and mission." At the same time, he and members of his team refuse to clarify the details.

This vague phrase created enormous uncertainty and anxiety among the European allies. Currently, European ambassadors are seeking to meet with Trump associates to find out his intentions.

More than half a dozen current and former European diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of retribution from Trump, said there was growing concern at the foreign ministry and government levels that Trump's return could mean not only the abandonment of Ukraine, but also America's retreat from the continent and the destruction of the Atlantic alliance.

James Stavridis, who served as NATO Supreme Commander from 2009 to 2013, said:

"There is great fear in Europe that Trump's second presidency will lead to the actual withdrawal of the United States from NATO. This would be a huge strategic and historical failure of our country.".

According to the NYT, countries that are "most vulnerable to an attack by Russia" will try to curry favor with Trump by increasing orders for American weapons or by taking symbolic steps to flatter him.
