The Russian Federation blew up the Kakhovskaya HPP

On the morning of June 6, the Operational Command "South" reported that the Russian invaders blew up the Kakhovskaya HPP.

Oleksandr Prokudin, the head of the Kherson OVA, reported that the evacuation of the local population from dangerous areas had begun. According to Prokudin, the water will reach a critical level in five hours.

The police noted that the villages of Mykolaivka, Olhivka, Levo, Tyaginka, Ponyativka, Ivanivka, Tokarivka, Prydniprovske, Sadov and part of the city of Kherson are Korabel Island in the potential flooding zone on the right bank of the Dnipro River.

In the Korabel microdistrict in Kherson, the electricity supply was cut off due to flooding caused by the detonation of the Kakhovskaya HPP by the occupiers.

In total, about 16 people live in the flooded area, according to the authorities. Critically high water level is expected around 11 o'clock. There are four main recommendations: turn off all electrical appliances, take documents and essentials, take care of loved ones and pets, follow the instructions of rescuers and police.

The parties to the conflict traditionally blame each other for this, but the flooding of the positions of the Armed Forces on the islands near Kherson is more beneficial to Russia than to Ukraine. Obviously, if the channel of the Dnieper in the Kherson region becomes wider, then Ukrainian operations to launch landing or reconnaissance groups on the left bank will be greatly complicated. Including through the islands near Kherson, which at the time of the dam breach were disputed territory and a convenient "bridge" for crossing to the left bank (the islands are flooded first).

Everything points to the fact that it was the detonation that took place - missile strikes on the dam had been made before, but only a coordinated detonation could destroy 11 spans out of 28 at once. Moreover, the opinion has already been expressed that the Russians simply did not calculate the force of the explosion, destroying much more than was planned to sink the positions of the Armed Forces. Ukrhydroenergo reported that the Russians had blown up the engine room of the hydroelectric power plant from the inside — therefore, "the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power plant has been completely destroyed and cannot be restored."

The destruction of Kakhovskaya HPP is of critical importance for Crimea - now there will be no water in it for sure. The north of Crimea received water, the source of which was irrigation facilities fed with water from the Kakhovsky Reservoir. Actually, this reservoir was built in 1958 to supply water to the Crimea. The North Crimean Canal itself begins in Nova Kakhovka.

A decrease in the water level in the Dnipro can have negative consequences for the Zaporizhzhia NPP. This is reported by "Energoatom". The water level in the Kakhov reservoir, where the nuclear power plant is located, began to fall. Water is needed for the plant to power the turbine capacitors and safety systems.

At the same time, there is enough water now. "Now the station cooling pond is full: as of 8:00 a.m., the water level is 16,6 meters, and this is enough for the needs of the station," says Energoatom.

The rate of this lowering of water in the Kakhov Reservoir and rising downstream is, fortunately, not as fast as it could be, since not the entire dam is destroyed, but only its above-water crest.

The dams on the Dnieper were last blown up by order of Adolf Hitler in 1943 during the Soviet offensive. Kakhovskaya HPP was built already in the 50s of the last century. Back in October of last year, Zelensky accused Russia of mining the station.
