After Stoltenberg's resignation, Ursula von der Leyen may become the Secretary General of NATO, — The Sun

The 30 member countries of the Western Alliance choose a new leader based on consensus behind closed doors

The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, can become the successor of the general secretary of the alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, after his resignation. He writes about this with reference to a diplomatic source The Sun.

Von der Leyen's term as president of the European Commission expires next year, and a number of NATO member countries have offered her to lead the Alliance in October this year.

British sources suggest that Britain is likely to veto von der Leyen's candidacy, citing her poor record as head of the German Armed Forces.

In addition to her, British Defense Minister Ben Wallace claims to be the first NATO Secretary General from Great Britain in the last 20 years.

Canadian Finance Minister Khrystia Freeland, who is half-Ukrainian, is also running. The Prime Minister of Estonia, Kaia Kallas, was also offered this position, but refused it.

There is no official election of the NATO Secretary General, and the 30 member countries of the Western Alliance elect a new leader based on consensus behind closed doors.
