On Wednesday, May 3, the European Commission detailed the offer of financial support to five EU states – Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary – in exchange for the lifting of unilateral import restrictions on agricultural goods from Ukraine. This is stated in the message of the General Directorate of the European Commission for the Development of Agriculture.

The support, as expected, involves the allocation of 100 million euros from the EU's agricultural reserve to support farmers who produce grain and oil crops in five EU member states.

Among other things, the European Commission proposes to allocate 9,77 million euros to Bulgaria, 15,93 million euros to Hungary, 39,33 million euros to Poland, 29,73 million euros to Romania and 5,24 million euros to Slovakia.

Countries can supplement the amount with national funds by a maximum of 200%, bringing the total financial assistance to affected farmers to 300 million euros. Payments are expected to be made by September 30.

"The support will help member countries bordering Ukraine to partially compensate for problems related to logistical obstacles arising from the import of certain agro-food products from Ukraine," the European Commission notes.

In response, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia commit to cancel unilateral measures banning the import of wheat, corn, rape and sunflower seeds, as well as any other products coming from Ukraine.
The support package is expected to be approved by the five EU states at the next meeting of the special committee on common organization of agricultural markets, after which the decision will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union, and it will enter into force the day after publication.

It will be recalled that on May 2, the European Commission adopted exceptional and temporary precautionary measures regarding the import of certain agricultural products from Ukraine after pressure from five member states of the European Union, which blamed Ukrainian imports for the collapse of local prices.
