The first preparatory session of the court, dedicated to the attempt on the deputy of the Odesa Regional Council from "Batkivshchyna" Andrey Babenko, took place the other day in Belyaevka.
This crime occurred in the midst of a political race at the end of October last year. The politician, being a candidate for deputy, was on his way to a meeting with voters when a radio-controlled explosive device went off near his car in the village of Kurgan, Belyaevsky district. The political machine was literally riddled with fragments. Babenko received head injuries and was urgently hospitalized in a clinic, where he underwent emergency surgery.
According to the investigation, the attempt was caused by political motives. In this way, they tried to remove a popular politician from the pre-election race in a district where there was a heated political struggle. Meanwhile, this did not help the organizers of the crime, because Andrey Babenko brilliantly won the elections.
At the same time, the police opened criminal proceedings on charges of illegal handling of weapons, ammunition and explosives, as well as attempted murder.
It should be noted that the law enforcement officers worked quickly and the perpetrators of the crime were soon identified and detained.
Now two people who planted an explosive device are on the dock, their third accomplice is wanted. At the same time, the criminals still deny involvement in the attempt. In this regard, the prosecutor's office has yet to prove their guilt, which, however, is fully confirmed by the collected case materials.
As Andrey Babenko himself said, he will follow the court proceedings with maximum attention.
"For my part, I would like to express my great gratitude to the leadership and employees of the National Police in the Odesa region. They worked perfectly, they have honor and dignity," the deputy added.
Tomorrow, at 14:00 p.m. on October 6, the Belyaevsky district court will consider the merits of the case.
According to lawyer Ilya Haldai, since the case has caused a wide public outcry, it will be under the close scrutiny of the public. He is sure that prosecutors and Themis will bring the investigation to an end, and the perpetrators will suffer the punishment they deserve.
