Attempt on Andrey Babenko: the court rejected the appeal

Today, the Odessa Court of Appeals considered the appeal of the defense attorney of one of the suspects in the case of an attempt on a deputy of the Odessa Regional Council, Andrey Babenko.

Three people are accused of an attempt on a politician, one of them is wanted. Earlier, law enforcement officers detained two suspects who planted an explosive device near the politician's car. Now they are in a pre-trial detention center.

In the appeal, the defendant's lawyer asked to change the measure of restraint from detention to round-the-clock house arrest. In addition, he stated that his client has throat cancer.

At the same time, the representative of the prosecutor's office indicated that if the suspect's restraining order is changed, then, being under house arrest, he will be able to supervise other participants in the crime who have not yet been brought to justice, in particular, the organizer of the crime. Also, the suspect will be able to destroy the evidence that has not yet been established by the investigation.

As the lawyer of the injured politician, Ilya Haldai, reported, earlier the diagnosis of the accused was not confirmed, including medical reports.

"During detention in the SIZO, the suspect was offered a medical examination, but he refused it twice out of his own convictions. That is, the person intentionally does not provide the opportunity to conduct a full clinical examination to confirm his diagnosis," Ilya Haldai explained to the court.

As a result, the court decided to refuse to satisfy the appellate complaint.

As ElitExpert reported earlier, in October of last year, an attempt was made to blow up the car of a politician running for the regional council. In the village of Kurgan, Belyaevsky district, a radio-controlled explosive device went off near Babenko's car. As a result of the attempt, the politician received head injuries. He was urgently hospitalized in a clinic, where an emergency operation was performed. The accused faces up to 15 years in prison.
