People's deputies supported the resolution on the appeal to the US Congress on the introduction of sanctions against the construction of the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline. Such a decision was made by the People's Deputies at the regular meeting of the Verkhovna Rada.
The resolution was initiated by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada, Dmitry Razumkov.
292 deputies spoke "for". In particular, the "Servant of the People" faction gave 217 votes, 23 - "European Solidarity", 17 - "Voice", 12 - "Trust", 10 - "Batkivshchyna" and 7 - "For the Future". People's deputies from the "Opposition platform - Za zhizn" did not vote.
The document calls on the US to use all possible legal tools to stop the construction of the gas pipeline by imposing sanctions.
The explanatory note to the document states that the gas pipeline is one of Russia's tools in the hybrid war against Ukraine. At the same time, the goal of Nord Stream 2 is to divide Europe, increase the EU's dependence on Russian gas supplies, and create a mechanism of pressure on Ukraine and other European states. It is to prevent hostile actions of the Russian Federation that the People's Deputies consider it expedient to appeal to the Houses of Congress with a request to increase sanctions pressure and prevent the completion of the construction of the gas pipeline.
Let us remind you that the day before that, President Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that there is a big risk of lifting US sanctions on Nord Stream 2 under Russian pressure.
As reported, the administration of US President Joe Biden decided to waive sanctions against Nord Stream 2 AG and its managing director Matthias Warnig.
At the same time, the US State Department proposed imposing sanctions against four Russian vessels involved in the construction of Nord Stream 2 and four companies associated with the project.
Kremlin representative Dmitry Peskov called the US refusal to impose sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 operator a positive signal.
