From January 1, Switzerland will officially allow changing the gender in documents without medical intervention. All 16-year-old citizens who are not under legal guardianship can do this. This is reported by Reuters.
According to the new rules, any person will be able to change his gender and name in documents by visiting the registry office on his own. Young people and persons under protection will need the consent of a guardian.
Previously, for a legal gender change, it was necessary to undergo a course of hormone therapy, for a name change, proof that the new name has been unofficially used for several years.
It is reported that such a step "will make the country a leader in the European movement for gender self-identification."
In addition to Switzerland, it is possible to legally change gender without medical intervention in Ireland, Belgium, Portugal, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Malta.
