Italy plans to reduce heating in homes and businesses for the winter to reduce gas consumption.
The country imported about 40% of its gas from Russia before the invasion of Ukraine, but quickly began to look for alternative sources.
Under the government's plan announced on September 6, the temperature in apartment buildings and other public buildings will be regulated at 19℃. For industrial premises, the indicator will be set at 17 ℃ of heat. The heating will also be turned on one hour less each day.
Italy hopes the restrictions will reduce gas consumption by 3,2 billion cubic meters between August and March, and aims to cut another 2,1 billion cubic meters by using alternative fuel sources to generate electricity.
The country filled its gas storage tanks to 83% as of early September, stocking up ahead of the colder months.
