In Germany, the majority is very wary of the issue of providing weapons to Eastern Europe due to the historical background and upbringing with the idea that "German weapons will never be here." About this in interview German Ambassador to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen told ZN.UA.
Answering the question why Germany, one of the world's largest arms exporters, refuses to supply arms to Ukraine, the ambassador said that "for Germany historically, Eastern Europe is a special part of the world, we were all brought up with the idea that there are more German soldiers and German weapons here never will be."
"This idea is in the DNA of the Germans. And there are very few of my compatriots who, like me, saw the war here now. I was brought up that way too. Yesterday (June 22 — ed.) was a symbolic date — the 80th anniversary of Germany's attack on the USSR. All this is very difficult for us. And it is necessary to find a majority in both the Bundestag and the government to change the opinion about weapons for this region, but it is really difficult," she said.
Reacting to the comment that Germany sells a lot of weapons to Egypt and other countries of the Middle East region participating in the conflict in Yemen, Feldgusen said that "this is not Eastern Europe."
"I am talking about history, and it is still very present in Germany in our discussions, and you see now these disputes about the politics of memory. And we are very careful in these matters," she said,
At the same time, the ambassador admitted that "times and governments change" and "perhaps, something will change in this matter as well."
Ukraine expects that Germany will change its opinion regarding the supply of weapons to the Ukrainian army. Discussions on this issue, which were provoked by one of the leaders of the Green Party after his visit to Donbass, are still ongoing in the German community.
