"Ukrpochta" apologized to beekeepers for the death of eight million bees in Transcarpathia, which were sent to the customer. The corresponding application is published on the company's website.
"We are very sorry that this happened. Ukrpochta transports bees every year during the season, primarily at the numerous requests of Ukrainian beekeepers," the company said and noted that this was the first time such a thing had happened. In particular, due to a sharp increase in temperature in the region up to + 27 °С and higher.
"Bees were transported according to established rules: bees were placed in wooden boxes with ventilation holes. It should also be understood that the trucks with which Ukrpochta transports shipments are not completely airtight - there is air access. In addition, at the beginning of the season, Ukrpochta employees were repeatedly informed about the conditions for sending bees," the company said.
At this time, the Transcarpathian Directorate of "Ukrpochta" is investigating the details of the incident. In parallel, negotiations were held with the Association of Beekeepers and, directly, with the sending beekeepers. The degree of responsibility and compensation issues will be determined after clarification of all circumstances.
"Ukrpochte" noted that from May 12 the requirements for the shipment and transportation of bees will be strengthened. In particular, the issue of temperature restrictions has already been agreed with the profile association: "Ukrposhta" will not transport bees if the air temperature in the city of departure or delivery exceeds + 20 °С.
"Taking into account the previously announced plans, the current case and the fact that the processing of such cargoes by automatic sorting lines is impossible, next year the company will stop providing this service," Ukrpochte added.
