This morning in the Grünewald district in the west of Berlin, there was an explosion at a police test site. According to the fire department, explosive items and fireworks are stored there, among other things.
"The forest and the ammunition storage area discovered by the Berlin police are on fire. The noise of the explosion should be expected, unpleasant sensations from the smell of burning are possible," the rescuers said on Thursday morning.
Usually, sappers destroy explosive objects there. This time something went wrong: the forest caught fire there today.
The fire is burning on an area of one and a half hectares. Firefighters began extinguishing the fire at midday, but prefer to keep their distance because the landfill is home to 25 tons of World War II-era fireworks and ammunition.
