In Ukraine, there may be a shortage of drinking water in 30 years

Already by 2050, drinking water will have to be imported

By 2050, Ukraine is threatened with a shortage of drinking water due to the discharge of hazardous substances, insufficiently treated drains, and clogging of rivers. This is reported on the website of the State Environmental Inspection.

"Today, about 3,6 billion people in the world suffer from a lack of clean drinking water. As a result of climate change and river pollution, by 2050, about 5 billion inhabitants of the Earth will feel the lack of resources," said Andrey Malevany, head of the State Ecoinspection.

According to him, the problem of water shortage also awaits Ukraine. According to the National Hydrometeorological Service, the concentration of toxic compounds in Ukrainian rivers is 30-40 times higher than the permissible limits. Therefore, according to the forecasts of the Institute of Water Problems and Reclamation, by 2050 Ukraine will have to import drinking water.

The official emphasized that fresh water is one of the most important components of the environment, thanks to which life exists on Earth. Water is considered a renewable resource, however, despite this, its reserves are decreasing catastrophically.

"The protection of water resources of Ukraine should become a priority task, because the lives of millions of people are at stake. And the State Ecoinspection is constantly working to strengthen control in this area. In particular, last year a Memorandum on cooperation with the State Water Agency was signed, within the framework of which we are working on the creation of a system of operational monitoring of the state of water bodies," the head of the State Ecoinspection noted.

According to him, every citizen plays a very important role in preserving clean drinking water.

"By conserving water and removing trash from coastal areas, we are making a contribution to the common future," Malevany emphasized.
