Academician (National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) of the National Academy of Sciences Sergey Komisarenko said that the spread of the coronavirus in our country is not as contagious as in Western countries. Thus, this became one of the reasons for the decline of the coronavirus in Ukraine.
He stated this in interview with RBC-Ukraine.
In addition to the fact that the virus in Ukraine is allegedly not so contagious, the scientist named another factor that contributes to the decrease in the number of patients.
"The second factor, which is also extremely important, is that our people are gradually beginning to understand the danger of the virus and the disease Covid-19, which it causes, and are beginning to more carefully follow the quarantine recommendations: masks, hand washing and distancing," he said.
According to the scientist, the main factor is the behavior of Covid-19 itself. It becomes more or less contagious.
"So far, there is no news that the virus is becoming more or less lethal, that it causes a more severe or mild disease. His behavior regarding the course of the disease has not yet changed. But his contagion is changing," Komisarenko said.
Also, the scientist does not think that there have been fewer tests.
"I don't think they are testing less. I think that they just detect the virus less. As a rule, testing is done when people with symptoms of the disease or after possible contact with infected people request a diagnosis. If the virus is detected less, therefore, fewer people have applied for diagnostics and, possibly, fewer people have been infected," Komisarenko assured.
It is worth noting that the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has indeed reduced the number of conducted PCR tests. For example, 1 tests were conducted on December 62, while 327 were conducted on December 28.
Moreover, the positivity of the tests remains at the level of 20-32% for the last 33 days. That is, there are fewer tests, but a third of those tested still have COVID-19. With such statistics, if more than 60 tests are conducted again, there will be definitely more patients than at the beginning of December. Especially since the level of hospitalization and mortality is not falling.
