Caravaggio's painting "The Arrest of Christ" will be restored until September 29, 2021, the Museum of Western and Eastern Art reports.
The canvas still has the status of physical evidence, which makes it impossible to move and display it. The painting is stored at the National Research Restoration Center of Ukraine in Kyiv, where its restoration has been underway for the third hour.
They plan to complete the restoration of the painting by September 29, 2021, the 450th anniversary of the artist's birthday.
"According to the administration of the National Research and Restoration Center, the restoration of the painting has been prioritized and it is planned to complete the work by the anniversary of Michelangelo Meriza da Caravaggio. The center also reported that there are no technical difficulties with the restoration and no problems should arise, which means that after the completion of the restoration, the canvas can be exhibited," — added to the press service.
As a reminder, Caravaggio's painting "The Arrest of Christ" was stolen from the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art on July 30, 2008. Later she was discovered in Berlin. The crime was solved thanks to the introduction of a bogus "millionaire" buyer.
