The first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, is deprived of the status of "yelbasa" ("father of the nation"), and the country will now be transformed from a super-presidential republic to a presidential republic with a strong parliament.

The updated Constitution of Kazakhstan enshrines the status of the president as equidistant from all political parties and movements and prohibits close relatives of the head of state from holding leadership positions in the public sector.
