More than 95 percent of workers report happier and healthier workplaces after implementing a four-day work week in Canada, according to a new study. He writes about it Now Toronto with reference to the report of the University of York on the conduct of the experiment.
In Canada, they tried to organize work in a four-day-a-week format. During the experiment, employers not only did not notice a drop in labor productivity, but also recorded an increase in it. The researchers say that the employees became significantly healthier and happier, so that most of the participants in the experiment decided to keep the four-day shift even after the test ended.
30 companies and 3,5 employees took part in the year-long study. There were two options for organizing a four-day work week:
— employees perform the former amount of work in 32 working hours per week instead of 40 hours;
— 40 working hours are distributed over 4 days of the week, rather than 5.
In both scenarios, the results were unexpected. As for the conclusions of the employers, then:
— 90% of managers said that labor productivity in the company remained at the previous level or even increased as a result of the introduction of the new schedule;
— 96% noted that it became much easier for them to attract and retain talented employees thanks to a more progressive schedule;
— 93% of respondents said they plan to continue using the four-day work week for a long time.
As for employees, 96% of them became happier. Also, the four-day working week affected people's health, significantly improving it.
"Studies show that reduced and compressed work schedules often increase productivity and economic returns, improve health, strengthen equity initiatives, and reduce carbon emissions." the report says.
