Switzerland invited China to participate in the global "peace summit"

Switzerland

Switzerland has asked China to take part in a global "peace summit", increasing pressure on Beijing to play its part in ending the war in Ukraine, although a number of details, such as the date and list of participants, have yet to be agreed. It is reported Bloomberg.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Switzerland, Ignazio Cassisa, noted that: "China has a very strong relationship with Russia, but is still willing to contribute to ending this war."

The minister said he made the request during a meeting Wednesday with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Cassis said Wang Yi had "taken note of the invitation" and that he expected a response in a few days.

In recent years, China has tried to build a reputation as a global peacemaker. But his plan for a ceasefire in Ukraine has not found much support in Kyiv, Washington and other Western capitals since it was announced early last year.

Chinese authorities skipped a meeting of national security advisers in Malta in 2023, where officials from more than 55 countries discussed Ukraine's desire to win support for its "peace formula. However, China was present at the summer meeting of advisers in Jeddah.

Beijing has provided diplomatic and economic support to Russia since President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion in February 2022. Last year, China's dollar-equivalent imports from Russia rose the most on record, a jump that comes as many Western companies avoid doing business with Russia and their governments impose sanctions on Moscow for attacking Ukraine.
