The Vatican is participating in a peacekeeping mission to try to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Pope Francis said Sunday, adding that he is also ready to help repatriate Ukrainian children taken to Russia or Russian-occupied territories. He writes about it Reuters.

"The mission is currently underway, but it has not been made public yet. When it is made public, I will talk about it," the Pope told reporters on his flight home after a three-day visit to Hungary.

The pontiff noted that peace is achieved by "opening channels."

"I think peace is always achieved by opening channels. You can never achieve peace through closure… It's not easy.”

He also added that he discussed the war in Ukraine with the Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orban, and with the representative of the Russian Orthodox Church in Budapest, Metropolitan Hilarion. According to him, "everyone is interested in the path to peace."

Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, Francis has pleaded for peace almost every week and has repeatedly expressed a desire to mediate between Kyiv and Moscow. His proposal has not yet brought any breakthrough.
