In February, the North Atlantic Alliance will organize large-scale military maneuvers, the largest since the end of the Cold War, about 90 military personnel will undergo training to deter aggression from Russia. They will be called "Steady Defender".
According to the German press agency, the corresponding maneuver was discussed today, January 18, on the sidelines of a meeting of senior military representatives of the North Atlantic Alliance in Brussels, reports Picture.
The Western Defense Alliance wants to mobilize about 90 soldiers for this. This means that the maneuvers will be the largest since the end of the Cold War.
The exercise, which will begin in February, will be called "Steadfast Defender". In particular, issues of notification and deployment of national and multinational ground forces will be worked out.
At the same time, a meeting of NATO defense ministers will also be held in Brussels in mid-February.
According to dpa, the exercise scenario involves a Russian attack on the territory of the member states of the Alliance, which leads to the declaration of a so-called "Alliance case" in accordance with Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
Article 5 governs the obligation to provide assistance in the Alliance and states that an armed attack against one or more Allies is treated as an attack against all.
The last major maneuver of this kind took place in 1988.
The largest NATO exercise to date since the end of the Cold War was organized in 2018 with an emphasis on Norway. About 2018 soldiers were involved in Trident Juncture 51.
The last NATO maneuvers, which were larger than the planned exercises, took place even before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Then, among other things, there was a series of maneuvers "Return of forces to Germany". In 1988, for example, about 125 soldiers were involved.
