Latvia announced the suspension of the operation of checkpoints in Vientula and Pededze on the border with Russia from October 16. This decision was made at the suggestion of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Latvia, reports local media LSM.
According to the mayor of Balvi, Serhiy Maksimov, if the "Vientuli" point was not closed, an emergency situation would have to be declared in several administrative regions, as a queue of 500 people could form at the checkpoint.
"Now it takes a day or a half to cross the border. If the situation worsens, even two or three days. We can only imagine the emotional state of these people." - noted Maksimov.
In addition, as noted, the closure of the two checkpoints will free up human resources of the Border Guard of Latvia, which can be directed to the protection of the state border elsewhere.
As reported, on September 26, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevičs said at a meeting with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius that his country is ready to close its borders with Russia and Belarus in case of potential threats.
