Ireland provides shelter to more than 110 refugees from the war in Ukraine. Since March 2022, the country has spent more than 750 million euros on social payments to Ukrainians.
Such figures were published by the Department of Social Protection of the Population on the eve of the reduction of financial support for newly arrived refugees, it is reported dublinlive.ie.
Last month the Irish government announced that social benefits for new arrivals from Ukraine will be reduced to 38,80 euros per week, and state housing will be provided for a maximum of 90 days.
According to the department's new calculations, from March 2022 to the end of December 2023, the state paid 754 million 169 thousand euros to people with temporary protection.
Almost two-thirds of this sum (481,6 million euros) was received by Ukrainians in the form of jobseeker's aid (820 euros per month), and another 81,4 million euros was transferred through the state pension scheme for refugees aged 66 and over. Child benefit (140 euros per month) amounted to 60,4 million euros.
Also, 21,4 million euros were paid as additional social assistance for specific expenses that the applicants cannot cover with their own funds. A little less than 2,6 million euros of this amount was for clothes.
Ukrainian refugees were also paid almost 12,7 million euros in disability benefits, as well as almost 6,4 million euros in caregiving benefits. Just over €51 million went to single-parent families (€232 weekly and up to €54 for each dependent child).
Parents were also paid 8,8 million euros under the aid scheme for clothes and shoes for returning to school. This is a grant of up to €385 per child in September to help pay for uniforms and shoes.
