The US State Department stated that consideration of Ukraine's accession to NATO is not expected at this year's summit. The main priority at the moment is the provision of assistance to ensure the security of the country, and not a formal invitation to NATO.
As the representative of the US State Department, Daniel Saizek, said in a comment Public, it is likely that discussions on Ukraine's accession will take place "after the war".
"NATO members know and understand that Ukrainians want to become NATO members immediately and as soon as possible. To be honest, this is not expected at the NATO summit this year... probably after the war." — Saizek stated.
The American official reminded that this year the North Atlantic Alliance turns 75 years old. The "Alliance is strengthening" and expanding with the accession of Finland in April 2023 and the final steps towards the accession of Sweden.
"This means that NATO is actually bigger and stronger than it has been in 75 years. This is also an important issue of communication between NATO and Ukraine." Saizek noted.
Saizek notes that there are more and more conflicts in the world, so there are also more challenges. Despite the disagreement among NATO members, in the end, the decision of the alliance remains unanimous regarding the accession of Ukraine. He reminded that last year at the summit in Vilnius, all the members of the Alliance repeated that "Ukraine has a place in NATO".
Currently, the main priority is to provide assistance for protection against Russian aggression, the official added.
