Another six months: Ukraine will receive a vaccine against COVID-19 only by summer

Best case scenario.

The government of Ukraine expects to receive about 8 million doses of vaccines against COVID-19 in the second quarter of 2021. This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal at a session of the parliament.

"As for vaccination, we expect that Ukraine will be able to receive approximately 8 million doses in the second quarter of next year," he said.

Shmyhal added that the government and the Ministry of Health are constantly negotiating with international companies regarding the purchase of additional batches of an effective and proven vaccine.

According to him, among these companies are "Pfizer" and "Moderna", which have already declared the success of their vaccines in 90% and 95%, respectively.

Recall that:

  • On November 16, developers announced the emergence of a vaccine against the coronavirus with 95% efficiency. This became known after the company Moderna published preliminary test data of its development.
  • The developers said that the effectiveness of the vaccine exceeded their expectations. However, it will not be widely available for several months yet.
  • Earlier, another company, Pfizer, which cooperates with BioNTech, announced that their vaccine is 90% effective. The results turned out to be much better than most experts had hoped. According to forecasts, companies will produce 50 million doses of the vaccine in 2020 and more than 1 billion in 2021.
