The Municipal Theater of Bologna had been looking for a chief conductor for several years and offered the position to Lyniv after her debut concert in the theater, which took place in March 2021.
"I had no idea that I would be the first woman to become the chief conductor of an Italian opera house. It's an honor for me and I'm very glad to be a part of this turning point in history," said Lyniv.
The first production under the direction of Lyniv will be the opera "Andre Chenier" by the Italian composer Umberto Giordano.
Ukrainka emphasizes that it is not so easy to make a career as a conductor, because men are usually chosen for this position.
"I didn't have a female acquaintance who would become a conductor and help me with advice. But now the situation is changing: more and more women are appearing in orchestras. Working conditions have become much better, as society begins to think more about equal rights. Young women who want to become conductors should not give up, they should grab all existing opportunities," explained the conductor.
Let us remind you that Oksana Lyniv is one of the top three female conductors of our time. She conducted an orchestra for the first time at the age of 16. In 2018, she became the first female chief conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra in the Austrian city of Graz (Austria).
In addition, she became the first woman to conduct a music festival in Bayreuth (Germany) in its entire 145-year history.
It is known that Oksana Lyniv was born in Brody (Lviv region) in a family of musicians. Lyniv conducted her first orchestra at the age of 16. Now he is 43 years old.
