Aggravation in Karabakh: is the Moldovan port of Giurgiulesti connected with the supply of weapons to the Caucasus?

On the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia, hostilities began, both sides accuse each other of this

On the border of Azerbaijan and Armenia, hostilities began, both sides accuse each other of this. According to Armenia, Azerbaijan allegedly launched missile strikes on peaceful settlements. The Ministry of Defense of Azerbaijan says the opposite - the Armed Forces of Armenia allegedly intensively shelled Azerbaijani border settlements.

It is not excluded that weapons that were delivered through the Moldovan port of Giurgiulesti are used in combat operations

In August, Azerbaijani informational and analytical Minval.az portal accused Moldova of secretly supplying weapons to Armenia, for which the Free Economic Zone "Ungen-Business" and the only Moldovan port were used. According to the publication, mortars, rocket launchers and rockets were delivered through Moldova, which were purchased from September 2019 to the summer of 2020 at the "Krushik" factory in Serbia. And then this weapon was allegedly used by the Armenian army against Azerbaijan during the escalation of the conflict in July of this year.

"Weapons and ammunition were first sold to an offshore company registered in the Ungen-Business free economic zone." Then the weapon was transferred by air from Serbia to Moldova in the status of offshore cargo, and after re-registration in the "Ungen-Business" free economic zone, it was delivered to the International Free Port of Giurgiulesti in Moldova. From this port, the weapon was sent by sea and land to Armenia with documents stamped by the Moldovan customs," the publication reports.

In turn, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić said, that Serbia sold weapons not only to Armenia, but also to Azerbaijan, and sold dozens of times more to the latter. "Both Azerbaijan and Armenia are our friends. In recent years, we have sold ten times more weapons to Azerbaijan. The military industry of Serbia employs 17 thousand people who must keep their jobs. A question arises: who will we sell to in the future? No matter who we sell to, we will still be criticized," said Vučić.

The portal Minval.az also notes that Moldovan offshore companies were used to supply weapons to Armenia and from other countries, not only from Serbia.

There was no reaction from the official Chisinau to these accusations. Although the mediation of Moldovan economic entities in the sale of weapons is impossible without approval. Thus, journalist and politician Dmitry Chubashenko claims that he is in Moldova "any arms transaction - sale, purchase, resale, transportation, import, export - was always carried out by the decision of a special commission that operated under the government and was usually headed by the prime minister. Usually, such transactions were approved by the Supreme Security Council under the President."

In this regard, the opposition tried to create an investigative commission. In particular, Renato Usatyi, a well-known politician in Moldova, at the same time the leader of "Our Party" and the mayor of Balti, stated: "The history of transportation through the territory of Moldova and the use of weapons registered here by economic agents, which are then used in armed conflicts, should be the subject of an investigation by the General the prosecutor's office and the investigative committee of the parliament". However, the official authorities ignored this demand.

Previously, Moldova has repeatedly figured in scandals over the sale of weapons, including to Libya, about  писал site EUROREGION info.
At the same time, ships and planes flying the Moldovan flag were used for their transportation. It is not excluded that with the activation of military operations in Nagorno-Karabakh, operations with weapons through Moldova, incl. through the port of Giurgiulesti are activated. The main thing is that the parts of the Moldovan railway that pass through the territory of Ukraine are not used for these operations. And the State Border Service must follow this up.
