Poland will continue helping refugees from Ukraine until the end of September, Rzeczpospolita

Poland

As the publication "Rzeczpospolita" reports, the special protection of Ukrainian refugees provided for by the Polish law, which expires on March 4, will be extended for six months.

"During this time, new rules for providing assistance will be developed," - reports the publication.

Currently, Poland compensates for partial payment of food and accommodation for Ukrainians who stay longer in refugee centers. But according to the publication, it exists only "on paper". According to local officials, no one monitors the payments, as it is difficult to verify the refugees' financial situation.

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, more than 42,2 Ukrainian citizens currently live in centers financed by the state — this is half as much as a year ago, when 82,5 people were in the centers. The ministry also estimated that from February 24, 2022 to December 27, 2023, almost 531 refugees from Ukraine took advantage of organized accommodation in all voivodships.

"We give ourselves six months to work out good changes in the law," - said Wesław Szepanski, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs of Poland.

"Changes are very necessary. Financial aid from the state should be provided only to the sick, dependents and disabled people, mainly from Eastern Ukraine." - says Aneta Zhokhovska, director of the Olena Grokhovska Foundation. This organization manages five refugee centers in Poland, where almost a thousand people live.

We remind you that thanks to a special act of March 2022, Ukrainians received the right to reside on the same principles as citizens of EU countries — full access to education, the health care system, and the labor market.
