Poland plans to cut aid for Ukrainian refugees

Poland

Next year, Poland will gradually begin to reduce social assistance for refugees from Ukraine. About this said Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller in an interview with PAP.

"This policy is temporary after the start of the war. [...] Therefore, gradually these decisions (about financial support — ed.) will be canceled, as it is written in the law, they will not be extended", he said.

It is likely that support for refugees will begin to be reduced in the first quarter of 2024. Muller expressed hope that it will continue "there will simply be no need."

According to the survey by the Pollster Research Institute, currently the majority of Poles, namely 60% of the respondents, are inclined to reduce aid for Ukrainian refugees, while 26% of respondents believe that it should be extended, another 14% are undecided, PAP notes.

Against the background of the latest escalation between Ukraine and Poland, Polish government spokesman Piotr Muller said that support for Ukrainian refugees may be cut.

However, Poland, as a member state of the European Union, is obliged to continue providing temporary protection to Ukrainians, as the EU Council on September 28 extended the Directive on temporary protection for Ukrainians until 2025.
