Taliban militants occupied the presidential palace in the capital of Afghanistan, Kabul.
Before that, the President of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani, left the country. A Taliban representative said that the order was given to "prevent looting after the police and officials fled."
The Taliban movement officially announced the establishment of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan in the country.
The press secretary of the political office of the Taliban, Mohammad Naim, said on Sunday that "the war in Afghanistan is over" and called on the international community for peaceful relations.
"We achieved what we wanted - the freedom of our country and the independence of our people. We will not allow anyone to use our lands to target anyone, and we do not want to harm others. We ask all countries and organizations to sit down with us at the negotiating table to resolve any issues," he said.
In turn, about 70 countries, including Ukraine, issued a joint appeal to allow all foreign citizens and Afghans who wish to leave Afghanistan after the transfer of power to the Taliban.
Now tens of thousands of Afghans and foreign citizens have formed a mob at the Kabul airport, trying to flee the country after the transfer of power to the Taliban.
Experts say: August 15, 2021 will go down in history as the day the Americans were defeated in the 20-year Afghan war. It is difficult to recall such a rapid and irreversible failure with such large multibillion-dollar investments and assurances of effectiveness.
At the same time, by its actions, the USA not only failed to liquidate the terrorist enclave, but also made it stronger.
It is symbolic that the collapse of the USA in Afghanistan occurred on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attack on the World Trade Center in New York, after which Washington started the war in Afghanistan. Moreover, they did not even have time to evacuate the American embassy in Afghanistan, not to mention those Afghans who helped the US.
Since its invasion of Afghanistan, the United States has invested tens of billions of dollars in the Afghan army - for military training according to NATO standards and the purchase of first-class weapons. And all this has now gone to terrorists from the Taliban.
