European leaders went into self-isolation after Macron was diagnosed with the coronavirus

European leaders and politicians went into self-isolation after the discovery of the coronavirus in French President Emmanuel Macron

The head of the European Council Charles Michel, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa and other European leaders and politicians went into self-isolation after the discovery of the coronavirus in French President Emmanuel Macron.

Many of those who visited Paris on the occasion of the anniversary of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and met with Macron went into isolation.

OECD Secretary General Angel Gurria also went into self-isolation.

"My thoughts are with President Emmanuel Macron for a speedy recovery. Due to his participation in the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the OECD on Monday and the subsequent medical protocols, I am self-isolating and taking a test," he wrote on Twitter, noting that all necessary measures were taken to ensure the safety of guests and staff.

Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa also went into self-isolation. He had lunch with Macron on Wednesday. The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, participated together with the French president in the European Council, so he also decided to isolate himself until the results of the test were received.

"I wish you a speedy and complete recovery, dear Emmanuel Macron! After our participation in the European Council, I decided to self-isolate as a precautionary measure until I get the results of my test to protect others. I have no symptoms, and I continue to fully work on my tasks and responsibilities," Bettel wrote on Twitter.

Belgian Prime Minister Alexandre De Croix contacted Macron last Thursday and also decided to isolate himself until receiving the results of the coronavirus test.

"I wish Emmanuel Macron a speedy recovery. We contacted last Thursday, today I took a test and am isolating myself until I get the result," De Croo wrote on Twitter.

The Prime Minister of Ireland, Michael Martin, also on Thursday decided to limit contacts while waiting for the results of his test, the Guardian writes.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, unlike many other European leaders, is not going to go into self-isolation. She had already taken a test for COVID-19 after meeting with Macron at the EU summit, and the result was negative. Merkel wished the French president a speedy recovery.

In addition to European leaders, several French politicians went into self-isolation. As reported by the BFMTV channel, on Wednesday Macron dined with ten people, including French Prime Minister Jean Castex, President of the National Assembly Richard Ferrand and Secretary General of the Elysée Palace Alexis Koehler.
