The giant landfill, the largest in the country, which is located in Podhortsy, Kyiv region, will be closed. Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klychko announced this during an online briefing.
According to Klitschko, the order to start the reclamation of the entire landfill has already been signed, and the draft of the first map has already passed the state examination, and the necessary equipment is being purchased.
— Polygon No. 5 in Podgortsy is the largest landfill in Ukraine. More than 450 tons of waste are transported to it per hour. This landfill has been in operation for 34 years. Imagine how much garbage there is! We implement the latest technologies at the landfill to minimize its negative impact on the environment. Let me remind you that a few years ago we installed a modern filtrate purification station, which today is capable of purifying 750 cubic meters of filtrate per day. This prevents leachate from leaking into the environment, the mayor said.
However, the process itself does not promise to be fast.
— We must do everything possible to reliably conserve garbage and prevent various kinds of accidents. In parallel, the city is working on creating an alternative to the landfill. Kyiv has already developed a "Waste Management Plan" that provides for the construction of processing plants, Klitschko summarized.
