The Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language, Taras Kremen, explained what spheres the transition to the Ukrainian language concerns from January 16, 2021. In addition to the service sector, where employees will have to speak only Ukrainian, the transition will also affect educational institutions — circles and sections.

According to the law, which will enter into force on January 16, all service providers must provide information about goods and services, as well as serve clients exclusively in the Ukrainian language. But it is possible to switch to another language after the client's personal request." The Ukrainian consumer will finally receive the right to receive service in the state language by default - in a supermarket or online store, in a cafe or restaurant, in a bank or pharmacy, at a gas station or at a train station , in a gym or a library, etc. There are few exceptions: only at the request of the client, his personal service can be provided in another language acceptable to both parties," said Kremin.
In addition, information in restaurant menus, shop price lists, tickets, technical specifications and instructions should also be presented in Ukrainian.
At the same time, Kremen said that the requirement for service in the state language does not only concern the sphere of trade.
"We are also talking about educational services (including clubs and sections), medical care, provision of social services, etc.," the ombudsman clarified.
In case of violation of these rules, the consumer can contact the employees with a request to provide him with service in the Ukrainian language. Every citizen of Ukraine can also make a complaint in the name of the Commissioner and send it by e-mail or in writing.
