The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine voted "for the sovereignty of Chechnya" and condemned the genocide of the Chechen people.
Ukraine calls on UN member states and international organizations to ensure an impartial investigation of international crimes committed on the territory of the temporarily occupied Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, and to ensure that the guilty parties are brought to justice.
Occupation of Ichkeria. Russia occupied the Chechen Republic in 2000 after a military invasion. Currently, the territory is "included" in Russia.
The declaration of sovereignty of Chechnya became the reason for a protracted military conflict, the main battles of which fell on the first and second Chechen wars between the Russian authorities and the rebels, which gradually caused an increase in tensions and military conflicts throughout the North Caucasus.
The Russian authorities call the Chechen politicians who are fighting for the independence of the republic "terrorists".
