The head of the Slovak Defense Ministry, Yaroslav Nagy, said that the authorities are considering the possibility of sending 10 out of 11 Soviet-made MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine. He said this in an interview AP .
According to him, one of these planes is reserved for the Slovak museum.
"We will never use MiGs again. They have no real value for us. If we give them to Ukraine, they will help save lives," said Nagy.
Prior to that, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy invited the planes to the Prime Minister of Slovakia Eduard Heger at the EU summit in Brussels.
Journalists reported that if the authorities agree to hand over the fighter jets, the state will become the first NATO member to do so.
Slovakia stopped using the planes in the summer due to a lack of spare parts and maintenance specialists after Russian technicians returned home.
"A final decision is expected within days or weeks," the message said.
In total, Slovakia supplied weapons to Ukraine worth almost 168 million euros.
Bratislava also signed a contract for the purchase of 14 American F-16 Block 70/72 fighter jets, but their delivery was delayed until 2024.
