The US Senate agreed to expand the country's powers to limit the illegal flow of migrants at the border with Mexico. It is reported CNN.
The Senate deal, which is likely to be released as soon as next week, would also speed up the asylum process by six months. Under the current system, it can take up to 10 years to seek asylum.
As the publication notes, this agreement also opens a window for negotiations on the allocation of funding for aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. Senate leaders hope they can include the deal in the debate. The plan also puts pressure on Republicans to decide whether to allow these new authorities or reject the plan, as former President Donald Trump urged the GOP to abandon what he calls the "perfect" bill.
President Joe Biden previously said the deal Senate negotiators were working on was tough and fair.
“It would give me as president new emergency powers to close the border when it gets overcrowded. And if I were given these powers, I would use them the day I sign the bill." Biden said.
Under the deal, the US Department of Homeland Security will be given new emergency authority to close the border if the average daily number of migrants reaches 4000 in one week. Some migrants will be allowed to stay if they are found to be fleeing torture or persecution in their home countries.
In addition, if the number of crossings exceeds 8500 in one day, the border will be closed to migrants who cross the border illegally. Under the proposal, any migrant who tries to cross the border twice while it is closed would be barred from entering the US for one year.
