Poland will not encourage Ukrainians to return home - the Polish ambassador to Ukraine

Currently, the Polish government is deciding how to settle the issue of long-term stay of Ukrainians in Poland

Poland will not encourage refugees from Ukraine to return, but it will not prevent them either, if the people so decide. The Ambassador of Poland to Ukraine Yaroslav Guzy stated this, informs DW.

He stated that Poland will remain absolutely neutral in this matter.

"That is, it will neither encourage nor hinder. This is a matter for decision of Ukrainian citizens residing in Poland. Whether they will decide to return or not." Guzy said.

The diplomat admitted that refugees from Ukraine are important for Poland, taking into account the needs of the labor market.

"I mean the labor shortage. I can imagine a situation when an employer, for example, who employs Ukrainians, convinces them to stay because it will be difficult for him to find a replacement for them. But these are not the things that the Polish authorities will somehow react to." Guzy added.

The ambassador also noted that the Polish government is currently deciding how to settle the issue of long-term stay of Ukrainians in Poland. Special protection and the right to benefits for refugees in this country are valid until the end of June this year, while the Council of the European Union has extended them until March 2025.

"Poland is not a state that provides social support for its citizens, that is, it is not a place where you can live comfortably on benefits and so on. Therefore, some people, for example, for obvious reasons, decide to move from Poland to Germany, for example, to a more generous country in this respect. However, I am convinced that we are dealing with a temporary solution while the Polish government thinks about how to settle this in the long term." the ambassador noted.
